Assemblyman Calls For Prohibition On Landlords Banning Certain Sizes Of Dogs

NEW CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Rockland County lawmaker wants to ban dog discrimination in housing.

As WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported, state Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski (D-New City) is a pit bull owner himself. He has introduced a bill that would prevent landlords from banning certain breeds or sizes of dogs in their housing units.

Under the proposed law, landlords could still prevent their tenants from having dogs altogether, or more than a certain number of them.

"But there really is no evidence a certain type of breed is dangerous," Zebrowski said. "You could have a docile shepherd, or you could have an aggressive Maltese. It's really how they're trained and brought up."

Property insurers have expressed concerns about the bill.

It is already illegal for New York municipalities and local governments to ban specific breeds.
