L.I. School Board Considers Gender-Specific Policy For Homecoming King And Queen
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Should a female be crowned homecoming king?
The Central Islip Board of Education is considering establishing a gender-specific policy for the high school's homecoming king and queen.
It comes after 17-year-old senior Faith Shepherd, an openly gay female, was named homecoming king in October, drawing outrage from a local church leader.
Bishop Donald Hudson, of the Common Ground Christian Life Church, called it an "outrageous violation of tradition."
Most residents who spoke with WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs seemed to favor tradition.
"She could be openly gay and still be the homecoming queen. Why not? Leave it alone. Some traditions are okay, leave them alone," resident Mike Rivera said.
"The obvious thing is why couldn't she just be the queen and have the king? It doesn't matter if she's gay or straight, she can still be the queen," another resident said.
"That's a big, big no, no in the Bible," said another resident.
Shepherd has said for her, the issue is gender equality.
There is currently no established rule on the gender of king and queen titles.
