L.I. Men Accused Of Running Down Police Officer Could Face 25 Years In Prison
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Two Long Island men now face charges that could land them 25 years in prison for allegedly running down a police officer as they tried to flee police after stealing a car.
Officer Nicholas Guerrero remains hospitalized from the late September crime spree that included a violent carjacking of an 86-year-old woman.
Officers attending Tuesday's arraignment in Central Islip called the accused men "parasites," CBS 2's Lou Young reported.
"It's a disgusting act to leave an individual, no less a police officer, laying in the middle of the street fighting for his life," Lou Tutone of the Suffolk County PBA said.
A relative of the two suspects, Shawn McAllister, insist they are not equally guilty.
McAllister turned them into police and blames everything on his brother, Chad Morizsan, the presumed driver who he says led their 22-year-old nephew, Nicholas Franzone, into a life of drugs and criminal activity.
"He was captive by my brother and my brother was threatening his life, not to leave him or he was going to hurt him. He had some kind of control over him. He really deserves a break," McAllister said.
But as Young reported, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota is in no such mood.
"We will be seeking the maximum sentence including even consecutive terms. They deserve no less than that," he said.
The charges depend on Officer Guerrero recovering from his injuries.; if he doesn't, the charges could be increased yet again, Young reported.
Officer Guerrero is currently hospitalized at Stony Brook University Medical Center.
