L.I. Man Charged With Running Off After Striking Car, Injuring Woman Last Fall

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man was arrested Wednesday, on charges of running off from the scene of an accident that left a woman seriously injured last fall.

Alvaro Alfaro, 26, of East Northport, was arrested at the Suffolk County police Second Precinct station, police said. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and circumventing an interlock device.

Police said Alfaro was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer south on Park Avenue in Greenlawn around 12:30 a.m. Oct. 13, when he struck a 1998 Dodge Neon at the junction with Lantern Street.

The driver of the Neon – Sulma Rivas of Brentwood – suffered serious injuries. Her passenger – Macia Castro of Central Islip – suffered minor injuries, police said.

Alfaro ran off on foot, leaving his puppy behind in the vehicle, police said. The puppy was not injured and was turned over to the Town of Huntington animal shelter, police said.

Alfaro was set to be arraigned Wednesday at Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip.
