Man Accused Of Working Without Permit At Keyport Building That Burned Down

KEYPORT, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a man for allegedly doing work without a permit on one of three buildings that burned down last week in Keyport, New Jersey.

Monmouth County prosecutors said Andrew Mayer, 28, had been doing roof work on one of the buildings and had not secured a permit.

Witnesses said they spotted him shortly before the flames broke out at the scene around 4 p.m. this past Friday.

The tall flames and thick smoke on West Front Street robbed the town of landmarks. A neighbor said the buildings were all over a century old.

The three buildings housed five businesses -- among them a tax office -- and an unknown number of apartments

Six firefighters were injured in the blaze, but were expected to recover officials said.
