Police: 17 Dogs, Puppies Found In Squalid Keyport, N.J. Home

KEYPORT, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police found 17 dogs and puppies in what was described as a squalid home in Keyport, New Jersey this weekend.

Around 11 p.m. Saturday, Keyport police were called to 23 Pine St. for a complaint of a dog barking, police said. Officers found numerous dogs in the home and called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for assistance, police said.

The home was described as being in "deplorable" condition, police said.

The dogs were taken to the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, police said. They were all in good health and were being chipped and observed before they can be put up for adoption.

It will be a few weeks before the dogs can be adopted, police said.

The person who lives in the house was not home when police arrived, but he cooperated with authorities when he arrived, police said.

Police described the discovery as a hoarding case. Charges were pending late Sunday.
