Kearny Brush Fire Snags NJ TRANSIT Service

KEARNY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A brush fire in Kearny, New Jersey caused major delays on NJ TRANSIT trains from Penn Station during the evening rush Thursday.

Around 5:45 p.m., a brush fire broke out near the Portal Bridge in Kearny, according to NJ TRANSIT. The fire was near the train tracks and caused delays to trains in and out of Penn Station, NJ TRANSIT said.

Delays of 30 to 45 minutes persisted for hours afterward. PATH and NJ TRANSIT buses were honoring NJ TRANSIT rail passes between Newark and New York City.

A huge crowd was seen amassed at Penn Station Thursday evening.

By 8:50 p.m., service had returned to normal with residual delays.

This was the second day of major brush fires in northern New Jersey in as many days. On Wednesday, multiple fires broke out in Edison, New Jersey – burning at least 65 acres and destroying construction equipment and vehicles.
