Gravitron Ride Catches Fire At Keansburg Amusement Park

KEANSBURG, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An amusement park ride caught fire late Monday afternoon in Keansburg, New Jersey.

The fire broke out in a ride called the Gravitron.

The ride – similar to a classic amusement park ride called the rotor – uses centrifugal force to float passengers off the floor and give them the feeling of floating, according to the amusement park website.

The fire was a result of an electrical malfunction, according to the Keansburg Fire Department. The ride was not in operation at the time of the fire.

A photo from the scene showed a plume of black smoke pouring from the top of the saucer-shaped ride.

The fire did not damage the boardwalk, the fire department said.
