Kean University Student Shot At Off-Campus Frat Party

HILLSIDE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A New Jersey college student was shot and wounded when a man who had been thrown out of an off-campus house party returned to the residence and opened fire.

Hillside police told CBS 2 that the shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m. Friday in front of the Sigma Theta Chi fraternity house on Conant Street.

Authorities say a scuffle ensued when the man was asked to leave the party, though it's not clear why the request was made.

The man then stated that he had a gun in his car and he "will shoot the place up," according to witnesses.

He returned minutes later with a handgun and fired multiple shots at the house while partygoers were standing on the porch and the front lawn.

Other party-goers including members of the Kean University Football team then stepped in and chased the man out of the house, according to the University. The suspect then entered into a 4 door vehicle and fled the scene.

Shortly thereafter witnesses said they heard multiple gunshots outside of the home.

The wounded man, identified only as a Kean University student, was part of a group of people standing on the porch. He was shot in the stomach and hospitalized in stable condition.

No other injuries were reported.

The gunman is not believed to be a Kean student, police told CBS 2.
