Protest Held Outside Kean University Over Alleged Discrimination, Use Of Funding

UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of clergy members, students and faulty rallied and marched on the sidewalk outside Kean University Friday.

"Power to the people! Since 2003, Kean University has experienced allegations of discrimination against black women educators, racial discrimination, intimidation and reprisal against outspoken veteran educators," said one protester.

"World class education doesn't happen by making world-class buildings," said another protester.

Ralliers said Kean has spent too much money on sprucing up the campus, while cutting faculty and raising tuition, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.

"We're calling for an end to institutional injustice," said another protester.

"Like all of the people speaking out today, Kean University embraces diversity and seeks social justice and equality for all," said university spokesperson Margaret McCory.

McCory said, as far as institutional racism goes, the school doesn't know why it was being targeted by protesters.
