Judge Rules L.I. Woman Can Keep $10,000 Ring After Dumping Boyfriend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island woman is allowed to keep her $10,000 engagement ring, even though she broke up with the man who gave it to her.

A judge ruled Debbie Lopez of Valley Stream can keep the ring because her now ex-boyfriend and father of her son never actually proposed.

There's a law requiring women to return engagement rings, but the judge said it was given as a gift and not in contemplation of marriage.

The man's attorney said even though he never technically said "will you marry me?," Lopez knew what it was for.

"A woman knows if you have a ring on your hand and it's on this finger, you're engaged," attorney Jasmine Hernandez said.

The former boyfriend claims he had the couple's 6-year-old son hand Lopez the ring during what he said was a proposal at Rockefeller Center.
