On WFAN: Jorge Posada Sorry For A-Rod Comments

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Jorge Posada says he was "cornered" into a headline-grabbing response about his friend and former teammate Alex Rodriguez.

Posada apologized to the New York Yankees slugger during an appearance Thursday on WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" show, one day after "CBS This Morning" aired an interview in which the retired catcher said A-Rod should be denied entry to the Hall of Fame due to his history with performance-enhancing drugs.

"I tried to text him yesterday," Posada said of Rodriguez. "I feel like I was cornered into this answer. I know better. I was really caught off-guard."

Posada said he's been fielding tough questions while on tour to promote his new memoir, "The Journey Home: My Life in Pinstripes."

"The thing is, the book is not a controversial book," Posada said. "And the questions that have been asked from the get-go are very controversial."

CBS' Mark Strassmann was the first to interview him about the book, Posada said. In the same sit-down, the 43-year-old appeared unhappy that a juiced-up A-Rod beat him for the American League MVP award in 2003, when Posada finished third.

"Alex I'm happy for -- I mean, I love the guy," Posada told Boomer & Carton. "I care for him."

Posada said he'll eventually have a conversation with Rodriguez, who took the high road when asked about the comments Wednesday.

"He knows how I feel about him," Posada said. "And I would like to -- if I caused him anything, I would like to apologize. ... I felt like the guy kept pushing towards that response, and I should have known better."
