Johnson & Johnson Warns Diabetics Of Potential Insulin Pump Hack

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Johnson and Johnson says its OneTouch Insulin Pump has a big bug that makes it vulnerable to hackers.

According to cybersecurity Rapid7, Inc. who studied the OneTouch technology, lapses in encryption within the devices' ping system allow for vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to manipulate the device and administer unhealthy amounts on insulin, risking potential overdose for users.

The company says hackers could potentially program the pump to administer an insulin dose while standing more than a mile away from the device, given appropriate circumstances.

Rapid7 published their findings on their blog on earlier this week.

According to Johnson and Johnson, the risk of a hack is low.

There have been no reports of any hacks as of Wednesday morning.
