Johnny Damon: I Want Donald Trump For President

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Paul O'Neill isn't the only former New York Yankee who is backing Donald Trump for president.

Johnny Damon, who won a World Series with the Yanks in 2009, told the New York Daily News he will be voting for the Republican presidential hopeful.

"I want (Trump) for president," Damon told the Daily News. "I'm a Trump fan ever since I met him seven or eight years ago. Everything he does, he does first-class – his hotels, his businesses, his golf courses. The issues all the other politicians failed to discuss, (Trump) is bringing us up to speed."

Damon got up close and personal with Trump while he participated on season seven of "The Apprentice."

Damon, who played for 18 seasons with seven teams, supported Trump's immigration stance.

"Everyone is calling him a racist. He just wants people to come into this country legally and fill out the proper paperwork," Damon told the Daily News.

However, Damon did admit that building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border would be "tough to do."

"I can see other people's views. The country is so split. Building a wall is going to be tough to do, and there would have to be beefing up of patrols," Damon said. "He's trying to make the country great. We're worrying too much about what's going on in Cuba, the Middle East. We have enough to worry about here."

Damon also said he'd be more than happy to campaign for the Republican front-runner.

"If (Trump) needs me anywhere, I'll be there. He's a good friend," Damon said.

On Tuesday, O'Neill attended Trump's victory rally in Florida after he won the Michigan and Mississippi primaries.

"Do you endorse me? I love you. Thank you, Paul. Wow, that's a great endorsement from Ohio," Trump said to O'Neill after spotting him in the crowd.
