Jets, Looking For Quarterback Help, Have Eye On Veteran Josh McCown

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Last month, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan told WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" that the organization needs to "live with Geno (Smith) for a little bit."

But that certainly doesn't mean that the GM isn't looking elsewhere for quarterback help.

Maccagnan told reporters on Wednesday that the Jets have met with 10-year veteran Josh McCown.

The veteran quarterback was cut by the Buccaneers on Feb. 11 after just one season with the team.

Smith regressed in his second season with the Jets. Maccagnan and new head coach Todd Bowles have indicated that the former second-round pick will have another chance to prove himself, but Smith will likely have plenty of competition in camp.

"I think I would say, simply, every quarterback out there we'd have an interest in," Maccagnan said at the NFL scouting combine on Wednesday. "We did visit with Josh here at the combine, so we had a little chance for him to kind of feel us out and us to feel him out a little bit.

"That doesn't necessarily mean that we're actively going after him. It's sort of an inquiry process we're going through."

McCown, 35, appeared in 11 games for Tampa Bay in 2014. He completed 56.3 percent of his passes for 2,206 yards and threw 11 touchdowns -- in addition to three rushing scores -- to 14 interceptions. He also fumbled 10 times.

The Jets have the sixth pick in the upcoming draft, and many experts have New York taking Marcus Mariota with that selection. There have been plenty of reports, however, suggesting that Maccagnan might trade that pick if the right package is offered.
