Jets Hire LSU's Thomas McGaughey As Special Teams Coordinator

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The New York Jets have hired former LSU assistant coach Thomas McGaughey as special teams coordinator.

McGaughey replaces Ben Kotwica, who left Rex Ryan's coaching staff to take a similar position with the Washington Redskins.

McGaughey spent three seasons with LSU, working as the Tigers' special teams coordinator and helping lead them to the BCS national title game in 2011. He went to LSU after working as the Giants' assistant special teams coordinator for four seasons, including being part of the team that won the Super Bowl in 2008.

The Jets announced the addition of McGaughey on Twitter. Meanwhile, the 40-year-old responded to a flood of congratulatory tweets.

McGaughey, a former defensive back for the University of Houston, has also coached with the Cougars, the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe. He was also a pro scouting assistant with the Houston Texans.
