Jersey Shore Drowning Victim Was Stepson Of Yonkers Schools Superintendent

MANTOLOKING, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man who drowned over the weekend while swimming at the Jersey shore was the stepson of Yonkers' schools superintendent.

Authorities say John Crimmins was with friends in the ocean off of Mantoloking when he suddenly disappeared from their sight around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

An extensive search was launched, and Crimmins was found in the surf about a half-hour later near Strickland Street. Rescuers performed CPR. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.

Crimmins' stepfather, Yonkers Schools Superintendent Michael Yazurlo, issued a statement to the Journal News confirming his death.

"Our hearts are heavy, we will miss John," Yazurlo said.

Crimmins is also survived by his mother, Nancy, and a sister.

Authorities have not released further details on the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

The U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police and fire crews from surrounding communities assisted in the search for Crimmins.
