Mother Charged After Girl, 2, Is Found Dead In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A mother was charged Wednesday after a 2-year-old girl was found dead in Jersey City, prosecutors said.

Shortly after 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jersey City police were called to a residence on Union Street for a report of a possible death, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor's office.

They found the lifeless body of the 2-year-old girl at the scene, prosecutors said. The cause and manner of death were pending an autopsy at the Hudson County Medical Examiner's office.

The girl's mother, Tracey Mitchell, 23, was charged Wednesday with endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse, prosecutors said. Bail for Mitchell was set at $150,000.

Prosecutors did not specify exactly what Mitchell was accused of doing to her daughter.

The investigation continued late Wednesday.
