Student Shot After Fight At High School In Jersey City Spills Into Streets

JERSEY CITY (CBSNewYork) - A fight at William L. Dickenson High School in Jersey City spilled out into the streets and ended with one student shot, authorities said.

The fight began at around 2 p.m. and involved several students.

The student was shot in the leg about a block from the school at Palisade Avenue. The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Dickenson High School and nearby St. Joseph's Catholic School were placed on lockdown.

Police are hunting for a suspect.

"The fact that a disagreement between two students at a high school can escalate to gun violence speaks to how outrageous our culture is today," said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. "Clearly, issues of open access to guns that plague every city in the country need to be addressed in the immediate future by Congress. Congress needs to act now to stop the flow of guns across state borders."
