Jersey City Putting Out Extra Supervision For 'Mischief Night'

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - The cobwebs are on the houses and the candy corn is ready, but Jersey City Public Safety Director James Shea says the police are ready too—for "Mischief Night," that is.

For those in the dark about Mischief Night, it takes place the night before Halloween when some children and teens engage in pranks before the official spook-fest.

"We put out extra supervision in every single district," Shea told 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet Thursday.

He says police would like to get to the people planning mischief before they do anything they regret.

"The message to the citizens out there would be please call us if you observe anything so we can get over there and respond to it immediately," he said.

Shea says Jersey City doesn't have a long tradition of mischief on the unofficial night of pranks, but there is still a zero tolerance policy toward behavior that negatively impacts other residents.
