Jersey City To Mark Fourth Of July With Hudson River Fireworks Display
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- The East River will not be the only waterway lit up with fireworks this Fourth of July.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, the lower part of the Hudson River will be home to a dazzling display as well.
Despite the cloudy forecast, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop is pretty optimistic that rain will not keep the crowds away.
"Last year, we had 50,000 to 60,000 people and we had really horrible weather," he said.
Fulop said 25 minutes worth of fireworks will go off at Liberty State Park with the Statue of Liberty in the backdrop.
The fireworks cap a full day's worth of events to rival the show along the East River.
"Last year, I think New Jersey and Jersey City held its own and this year will be even bigger," Fulop said. "We'll expect at least 50,000 people in the park and it's an all-day carnival. There's a free concert, it's a family event."
Security will also be ramped up around the park.
"You can never take too many precautions, so we certainly prepare," Fulop said.
