Jersey City Casino Could Be A Winner, Some Say

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- New York's plans to build three casinos further north of the city suburbs is seen as great news for New Jersey's prospective gaming industry.

In Jersey City, there are plans for a high-rise waterfront casino complex next to Liberty National Golf Course and Liberty State Park, potentially with auto racing, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.

Lobbyist Bill Pascrell III said Liberty Rising could draw a huge upscale crowd "through rail, boat and road."

"The models show that would be the highest-grossing casino in North America, more than anything in Vegas," Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said.

"You can't get closer to Manhattan," he added.

With Atlantic City's numbers lagging, lawmakers are looking to put up a referendum next year to allow casinos outside of Atlantic City.

Jersey City and the Meadowlands are "two strong, viable projects," Pascrell said.

"I think it's a wonderful opportunity," he said.
