Officials: Woman Accused Of Throwing Newborn Out Window Claims She Thought Baby Was Dead

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Bronx woman accused of throwing her newborn daughter out of a window told authorities she thought the baby was dead.

Jennifer Berry, 33, was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for the incident, which occurred on Sept. 28.

Berry pleaded not guilty to the charges in court on Tuesday.

Authorities say Berry knew the newborn baby girl was alive when she threw her from the seventh floor of a Bronx apartment building into an alley below. The city medical examiner ruled the baby's death a homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries, CBS2 reported.

The girl was born inside the apartment and the umbilical cord was still attached, sources said.

Police also questioned the father of the child, but released him after he said he was in another room at the time and didn't even know about the pregnancy.
