Police: Off-Duty Corrections Officer Shoots, Kills Robbery Suspect In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An off-duty corrections officer fatally shot a man who was trying to rob him of his motorcycle Saturday night in Queens, police said.

As CBS2's Scott Rapoport reported, five men were hanging out around 10:30 p.m. outside what police describe as a motorcycle social club at Rockaway Boulevard and 95th Avenue in Jamaica. That's when the group was approached by a man wearing a multicolored bandana covering his face and carrying a gun, police said. He demanded the keys to their motorcycles, cops said.

The New York state corrections officer, who was one of the men in the group, shot the suspect twice in the head, killing him, police said.

Authorities are not releasing the 55-year-old shooting victim's name until his family has been notified.

Cops say they recovered his loaded .380-caliber gun at the scene.

Police also have not released the name of the corrections officer.

The investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
