As Islanders Clean Out Lockers, Okposo, Nielsen And Martin Face Uncertain Futures

SYOSSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- While word got out Tuesday that defenseman Travis Hamonic has rescinded his trade request, three other Islanders were being asked about their futures as the players cleaned out their lockers.

Longtime forwards Kyle Okposo, Frans Nielsen and Matt Martin are all pending unrestricted free agents this offseason. All three said they have not engaged in substantive contract talks with the front office.

"It could be the last time signing Islanders stuff as a member of the team," Okposo said, according to Newsday. "It's a bit of a somber moment. But at the same time, I might be back."

The Islanders won their first playoff series in 23 years this season but were eliminated in the second round Sunday by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Okposo said the team has not given him any indication, one way or another, about whether it would like to re-sign him.

"I knew pretty early there weren't going to be any talks, so I did my best not to think about it," he said. "I'm looking forward to making some decisions. There's definitely a little bit of uncertainty, but it comes with the territory."

Nielsen, 32, said his agent and general manager Garth Snow have had some conversations but have not held contract negotiations.

He said he wants to remain an Islander.

"I love being here, and I would love to be back," Nielsen said. "We'll see what happens."

Martin, too, said he prefers to return to the Islanders.

Okposo was the Islanders' first-round pick in 2006. This past season, he had 22 goals and 42 assists.

Neilsen, a third-round pick in 2002, had 20 goals and 32 assists.

Martin, 27, a fifth-round pick in 2008, had 10 goals and nine assists.
