Lamborghini fleeing police crashes into another car, killing 21-year-old woman in NYC
NEW YORK -- One person was killed when a Lamborghini went up in flames during a police pursuit in Inwood on Monday night.
Investigators say Monday night, a 22-year-old man in a rented Lamborghini with a female passenger ran a red light. When officers pulled the driver over and got out of their car, the Lamborghini driver took off and a pursuit began.
Police say officers were recorded driving at 40 mph, but the Lamborghini was going faster.
After a few blocks and a few turns, the driver hit a Hyundai, and the Lamborghini lost control, slamming into an above ground 1 train subway pillar.
Witnesses watched police officers drag the driver out of the Lamborghini on 10th Avenue near West 213th Street seconds before it burst into flames.
"I didn't know if it was going to blow up. I didn't really know what going to what was going to happen," witness Darren Swazo said.
The driver was rescued, but inside, a 21-year-old woman didn't make it out alive.
"I was a little bit shocked that they hadn't stopped the trains running. Two trains passed over while the thing was engulfed in flames," Swazo said. "It's obviously a tragedy. Somebody died, that's horrible."
Investigators say the Lamborghini driver is in the hospital. He's in critical condition, and charges against him are pending.
The driver of the Hyundai was also taken to a local hospital. His condition is unknown.
