Investigation Underway After Saturday Night Fire Uproots At Least 20 In Clifton

CLIFTON, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- Authorities are investigating a fire that tore through a string of buildings and uprooted at least 20 people from their homes in Clifton, on Saturday night.

Crews rushed to Dayton Avenue around 11:30 p.m. and found three buildings in flames. The structures had businesses on the first floors with apartments above.

Firefighters rescued a man from a fire escape, and there were initial concerns that more people were trapped.

"Upon arrival they found heavy fire. There was an occupant trapped up on the second floor, they did rescue that person," Clifton Fire Department, Deputy Chief, Mike Sauer said, "We initially had reports that there were people on the rooftops, which turned out to be negative."

One firefighter suffered minor injuries. One of the buildings will be demolished.
