BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - There's a big championship competition coming to New York this summer.

As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, the International U.S. Open Grand Prix Gold Badminton Championships will be played at Suffolk County Community College.

"This was a special coup for us in regards to getting this to move to Long Island," college president Shaun McKay told Xirinachs. "It's the first time that we've secured a U.S. national tournament right here in Long Island."

The tournament has been held in California for the past 18 years. This year will mark the first time it's ever been held on the east coast, organizers said.

More than 30 countries will be represented at the July event.

The tournament is one of 11 Grand Prix Gold badminton tournaments worldwide, according to officials.

"A lot of money will be spent in the downtowns," Michael Grant with the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce said.

The tournament will be held from July 8 to 13, 2014. Tickets will cost $15 to $30 for adults and $10 to $15 for school age children.
