Interactive Apps Take Window Shopping To A Whole New Level

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's a dream come true for shopaholics. New technology has given new meaning to window shopping.

"I can shop 24-seven and I don't have to be online, sounds like a good idea," Vera Kohn told CBS2's Meg Baker.

Now, you can buy a Nicole Miller dress without stepping foot in the store.

If you see something you like in a window display, even when the store is closed, you can buy it and have it sent directly to your home. No waiting in lines, no carrying bags.

Stephen Savage is with Powatag, a start-up company that lets customers buy products they see on display, directly from their smart phone.

"We make it as simple as see it, like it, buy it," he said.

Once inside the store the app recognizes the sound coming from the speakers and can pull up special deals.

"I think it's great, I would love to see something like this," Anna Rogowska said.

Powatag isn't the only company using technology to revolutionize the shopping experience.

"I pick up the charcoal soap and I get the price," Jared Schiffman said.

Schiffman founded Perch which makes traditional product displays interactive.

"When you pick up the pair of sunglasses it gives you detailed information about that pair," he explained.

And there's a hi-tech mirror in Neiman Marcus. It's actually a giant video screen and camera that lets shoppers compare different outfits and different colors.

"It's gonna make our life much easier than it is right now," Rogowska said.

It takes trying something on to a whole new level.

Powatag is available in a handful of stores, but company officials said the technology will expand to more stores later this year.
