Pair Facing Charges After Allegedly Stealing Car, Vodka From Indonesian Consulate
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two people are in custody in connection with the burglary of the Indonesian Consulate on the Upper East Side, authorities say.
David Rivera, 18, and accomplice Tyana Nunez, 16, of the Bronx, are now facing numerous charges -- including burglary, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, CBS2 reported.
Police say the incident happened around 1 a.m Monday, about an hour after the security guard left his post at the consulate on E 68th Street between 5th and Madison Avenues, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.
When Consulate General Benny Siahaan arrived to work Monday morning, he noticed the consulate's tan 2004 Honda Odyssey minivan, used for diplomatic business, wasn't parked in its usual spot.
"We asked our staff, nobody took it, nobody used it," he told CBS2's Magdalena Doris earlier this week. "So then we were sure somebody took it."
Police said the suspects snatched the keys to the minivan and used it as their get-away vehicle. They also stole a case of vodka, a Samsung tablet and a suitcase full of clothing, police said.
Investigators say the suspects were arrested yesterday after they were accused of returning to a Bronx hotel they had allegedly burglarized on Sunday.
During the arrest, police say Rivera tried bribing officers with money, alcohol and a car -- similar to items taken from the consulate.
