Inbound LIRR Service Shut Down For Hours Between Queens, Penn Station

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A problem with the third rail shut down all inbound Long Island Rail Road service between Queens and Penn Station for hours during the Thursday evening rush.

Westbound service between Jamaica and Penn Station, and Woodside and Penn Station, was halted during the 4 p.m. hour due to a third rail problem in one of the East River tunnels, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

The subway system honored LIRR fares on the E and No. 7 trains during the shutdown. There were also some delays and cancellations for outbound trains.

Service on the inbound LIRR between Woodside and Penn Station was restored by 6:30 p.m.
