Idaho Potato Commission Sends 6-Ton Spud Floating Through New York Harbor

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Baking on a barge in New York Harbor, Wednesday was a 6 ton potato, which would require a lot of butter and sour cream.

No matter how you slice it, it's big.

"Seriously, everyone asks if it's real. People stop they immediately fumble to get their phones out of their pockets to get a picture with it," Laura Martin with the Idaho Potato Commission said.

As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, the commission put the 12,000-lbs concrete and steel spud on a barge to tour the harbor.

"This is the Big Apple. We need to bring the big Idaho potato to the Big Apple," she said.

From here the potato will head to West Point on a flatbed truck. For cadets on kitchen duty, the spud could be their worst nightmare.
