Iconic Jazz Club Village Vanguard Celebrates 80 Years Of Business
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York iconic jazz club turns 80 this weekend.
As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, Debra Gordon has heard many ways to describe the Village Vanguard, but she likes to compare it to a concert hall that serves bourbon.
"What could be better," she added.
The daughter of the club's founder said it originally wasn't a jazz club when it opened its doors in 1935.
"Max Gordon, my father, opened the club as a place for poets and writers and Greenwich Village bohemian personalities," she said.
But Gordon said it later developed into one of the world's premiere jazz clubs.
"Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane;" are just a few of the greats Gordon said has performed there.
Gordon attributes the Village Vanguard's international acclaim to roughly 150 live recordings at the club.
