Experts Urge Residents To Organize Disaster Relief Kits

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and with Tropical Storm Erika responsible for at least 20 deaths in the Caribbean, Long Islanders are being reminded about the importance of disaster kits.

Do you have a disaster kit in your home? Is it in a safe place? Do you remember where it is?

Paul Dellauniversita, with Allstate Insurance, said these are all important questions to consider with the start of hurricane season.

"One of the the things that should be included in the kit is actually a whistle, which is considered to be one of the most important things," Dellauniversita told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "It's the first thing first responders listen for when they're trying to help someone out."

And don't forget water.

"They say 1 gallon of water per person, per day, for at least three days," Dellauniversita said.

Experts say you should pack canned goods, and don't forget a can opener. If you have infants, remember to pack diapers and if you have pets, don't forget pet food, Hall reported.

"Battery-powered radio and flashlight, first aid kit," Dellauniversita added.

According to Dellauniversita, only 15 percent of Americans are prepared for a disaster.
