70 Guns Taken Off Streets Following Gun Buyback Event On Long Island
HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials held a gun buyback event on Long Island Saturday.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman stood next to the 70 guns that were turned in at the Huntington Manor Fire Department -- and he pointed out a few of them:
"Sometimes you find surprising things; you have a flare gun that was converted to shoot bullets. This gun looks so rusty you would think it couldn't be used, but in fact when it was tested, it could," Schneiderman said.
Men and women lined up even before the program began, Hall reported.
For each non-working weapon turned in, residents received a debit card with $25 on it. And for each working assault weapon turned in, they received a $150 debit card.
"Since our office started, this program is up over 1,000 guns," Schneiderman said. "A thousand guns that can't be used in crime. A thousand guns that can't be used against a law enforcement officer."
Last march, a Suffolk County police officer was shot and wounded following a traffic stop not far from where the gun buyback was held Saturday.
