Huge Hornet Nest Found In Washington Heights Playground Tree

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An enormous hornet nest was found in a tree surrounding a Washington Heights playground Wednesday, prompting a response from the NYPD.

The hornet nest was found at Raoul Wallenberg Playground, at 188th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, the Department of Parks and Recreation told CBS 2.

The department worked with the NYPD Environmental Services Unit to determine what to do about the hornet nest, but decided not to evacuate the park, given that the hornets were not swarming or causing any problems.

The department decided it would be best to remove or fumigate the nest in the evening when the park was not filled with patrons.

The nest was described as being the size of a softball.
