Haledon Fire Leaves 1 Injured, Damages 3 Homes

HALEDON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- One person was injured and 26 others were displaced when a fast-moving fire gutted an apartment building and damaged three homes in a Passaic County community.

It's not yet known what sparked the fire, which broke out shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday on the ground floor of the building on Roe Street in Haledon. But officials say there's nothing to indicate it's suspicious.

The Record newspaper reported police officers and firefighters rescued some residents trapped in a house behind the building. The only exit from the house was an alleyway blocked by flames, so they helped the residents jump over a neighbor's fence.

A woman in that house suffered burns and was struck by falling embers while searching for her son. But she was treated at the scene.

Firefighters were still on the scene at 8 a.m. trying to put out any possible hot spots, CBS2 reported.

Authorities say the displaced residents were staying with family and friends, and it wasn't known if or when they would be able to return to their homes.
