Homeless Man Arrested In Connection With Series Of Long Island Bank Robberies
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A homeless man has been arrested in connection with a series of bank robberies on Long Island.
Charles Riehl, 43, allegedly committed four bank robberies during a spree that began on June 6, police said.
Riehl allegedly robbed three banks in Nassau County and one in West Babylon, Suffolk County.
A cab driver is being credited with helping police nab Riehl.
On Friday, he allegedly hit several banks in Nassau County, but police were able to track him down after he got into a cab.
"They called me on the phone (the 911 dispatcher), and said 'keep him in the car,' but he had to use the bathroom. They said 'we'll reach you in route on the parkway with the police department and pull you over, and just tell him I'm probably getting pulled over for being on the cell phone.' Even though I was on the phone with the dispatcher, with 911," the cab driver told CBS 2.
Riehl is charged with three counts of robbery in Nassau. He is also expected to face charges in Suffolk County.
No one was hurt during any of the robberies.
