Police: Driver Who Owes $12,000 In Unpaid Tolls Caught At Holland Tunnel

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A driver has been arrested for alleged toll evasion after Port Authority police said he tried to drive through the E-ZPass lane of the Holland Tunnel without paying.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, police said an officer saw a black Mercedes sedan with no front license plate or inspection sticker go through a toll lane at the Holland Tunnel.

When the E-ZPass reader indicated that the toll was unpaid, the officer pulled the car over, police said.

It was later discovered that the driver, 45-year-old Oscar Sanchez, had a suspended license in New Jersey and over 200 counts of E-ZPass toll evasions, totaling over $12,000 in unpaid tolls and fees, police said.

Sanchez was charged with theft of service and other charges. He is due in court in May.
