Holiday Decorations Damaged In Queens And Long Island

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Long Island and in Queens are investigating separate incidents of holiday decorations being destroyed or damaged.

In Suffolk County, police said someone slashed the inflatable Santa and Frosty decorations over the weekend at a home on Springdale Drive in Ronkonkoma.

The family took down all the other decorations after the incident, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

A sign on the front lawn reads," To the Xmas slasher: We have a video surveillance system. You and your car are on tape. The police have been notified. Good luck. Reward offered!"

The family is offering a $100 reward for information that leads to an arrest, Hall reported.

In Nassau County, someone destroyed a menorah set up in the front yard of a home in Plainview. The 80-year-old homeowner said this is the second time it has happened to him since 2011. Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

In Queens, officials said a menorah set up by the Hollis Hills Civic Association on the island at Union Turnpike and 220th Street was found damaged twice since it was installed on Dec. 15.

"This is a very mixed community and this type of incident is an aberration but still we must send a very clear message that this is not acceptable," State Sen. Tony Avella told 1010 WINS. "I think it's an attack on the Jewish faith and I think that's something that we must speak out against."
