He's Back! Michael Pineda To Start Against Orioles On Wednesday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Yankees are getting one of their Opening Day starters back.

Michael Pineda will come off the disabled list and start against the Orioles on Wednesday in Baltimore. Esmil Rogers was initially slated to make the start.

It's been a difficult year for the hard-throwing 25-year-old.

The right-hander started off the season brilliantly, but he quickly found himself in some trouble. Pineda was suspended 10 games in April for using pine tar, and then injured himself in a simulated game during the suspension.

The former All-Star was placed on the disabled list with a strained muscle in his shoulder, and it was initially believed that he would miss just three to four weeks. The big man suffered a setback in May, however, after experiencing inflammation.

Prior to getting suspended and subsequently going on the DL, Pineda was 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA in four starts. He struck out 15 and walked just three in 19 2/3 innings.

The current starting rotation consists of Hiroki Kuroda, Brandon McCarthy, Chris Capuano, Shane Green and Rogers.

Ivan Nova and CC Sabathia are both finished for the season, while Masahiro Tanaka is out with a partial UCL tear. Tanaka has been throwing pain-free, but he might ultimately need Tommy John surgery.

David Phelps is also on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

Yankees pitching has done an admirable job in the wake of all the injuries, but the star-studded offense has struggled. New York went 19 innings without scoring a run this weekend before Jacoby Ellsbury homered on Sunday.
