NYPD Officer Killed In Fiery Crash On Henry Hudson Parkway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD officer died in a tragic crash on the Henry Hudson Parkway early Sunday morning.

Police said 24-year-old Kimberly LaJara worked at the 121st Precinct on Staten Island.

LaJara was was one of two people killed just before 4 a.m. on the Upper West Side. Police said she was driving a Mercedes, when she lost control and struck a tree on the parkway near 98th Street, causing a fiery scene.

The passenger, identified as 32-year-old Oscar Monegro, also died, police said.

The parkway was shut down for nearly six hours.

The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known.

"We're mourning the loss of one of New York's Finest today. We lost an NYPD Officer today after a terrible car crash early this morning. We send our deepest condolences to their family, friends and brothers and sisters in the NYPD," Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter.
