Basketball Tournament Held To Honor Hempstead Teen Killed By Car

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)-- There was something special about a basketball tournament in Hempstead's Lincoln Park on Saturday.

The event was being held to honor 15-year-old Ka'Juan Polley. The aspiring basketball player was killed a year ago after being hit by a car while riding his bike, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

"He has his father's skills at basketball and we started him playing and eventually saw he had a gift," the teen's mother, Jennifer Smith, said.

Smith helped arrange the tournament and started a foundation in his name to help other young people.

"Just to give the kids another outlook on life," she said.

Friends of the teen say they are overcoming grief by doing something positive.
