Hempstead Not Sweating Snow-Removal Budget

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Despite a brutal winter, a surplus of salt has helped the Town of Hempstead with its snow budget for this year.

Supervisor Kate Murray said because the town purchased so much salt in 2013, a relatively easy year when it came to snow plowing, it has helped so far in 2014.

"Initially, we didn't have to spend as much of the budget on salt because we had the supplies," she told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

Murray said so far, the town has spent $750,000 of its $1.5 million salt and plowing budget and $100,000 of its $500,000 overtime budget.

"We hope we don't exhaust those budgets, but in that extreme scenario, we'll simply have to transfer dollars over from other parts of our budget (to) keep our residents safe and keep our streets clean," Murray said.
