Police: Suspect Robbed Hempstead Gas Station At Gunpoint

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Nassau County police are looking for a man who held up a gas station at gunpoint in Hempstead on Wednesday.

Police said the suspect walked into the Mobil Gas Station at 79 Old Country Rd. around 10:40 p.m. and displayed a black semi-automatic handgun that was hidden underneath a green cloth.

The suspect demanded money and fled the scene on foot heading westbound on Myrtle Avenue with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

This may not be the first time the suspect has struck on Long Island.

Police said they're looking into whether the suspect is the same man believed to be behind 14 similar robberies in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Newsday reported.

In many of the robberies, the suspect hides a firearm under a t-shirt or piece of cloth, police said.

Authorities described the suspect as a black male, 5'8" tall, in his 20s with brown eyes, and a thin build.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call  Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS (8477).
