Has Ryan Callahan Played His Last Game With Rangers?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Rangers' next game is Wednesday against Toronto, hours after the NHL's trading deadline -- and whether Ryan Callahan is still with the team at that point is anyone's guess.

It remains a very real possibility that Sunday's loss to the Boston Bruins was Callahan's last hurrah as captain of the Blueshirts.

"I didn't look at it like that," Callahan said. "This is where I want to be. I'm just focused on doing what I can for the team."

Callahan is reportedly seeking a seven-year deal worth $6.5-7 million annually from the Rangers. But TSN's Darren Dreger reported during a recent radio interview that the 28-year-old is "is softening a bit" in negotiations, according to SNY.

The Rangers -- said to have a five-year, $30 million offer on the table -- could choose to trade Callahan rather than lose him for nothing in free agency. The loudest and most persistent buzz so far has involved Tampa Bay and a potential swap for captain Martin St. Louis.

"Yeah, definitely it's been on my mind, there's no secret there," Callahan said of the March 5 deadline. "It'll be nice to get it done with and move past it."

The Rangers agreed Friday with defenseman Dan Girardi on a six-year, $33 million extension. Afterward, coach Alain Vigneault said he was "positive and optimistic" that a deal with Callahan would be next.

"Just wait and see, I guess," Callahan said. "Obviously my heart's still here and I want to be here. So we'll see what happens."
