Harvey Gets Into Twitter Spat With Fan, Says He Looks Forward To Beating Yanks
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Matt Harvey is on vacation, but that's not keeping him off of Twitter.
The Mets' ace, who will miss the entire 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, didn't take too kindly to a tweet from a Yankees fan who was bothered that he was enjoying himself.
The exchange went like this:
@NickDeBabylon I actually just did my rehab and could still probably throw better than you. Although you probably have more wins than me

@NickDeBabylon makes so much sense, since I am attacking someone on twitter at 7am about being on vacation.

@NickDeBabylon I am quite happy and will enjoy rehab, life and getting back to beating the Yankees. Which I have done.

@NickDeBabylon I think the Yankees have a couple guys who throw baseballs. And that is quite important

The 24-year-old later tweeted "Good morning" to "nice" people, a clear shot at @NickDeBabylon.

Harvey was brilliant for the Mets on the mound in 2013, but was criticized for some of his actions off the field. He appeared in ESPN The Magazine's "Body Issue" and was profiled in a controversial piece by Men's Journal, in which Harvey claimed he was misrepresented. In September, he did an awkward interview with Dan Patrick in which he repeatedly touted Qualcomm instead of discussing his troubled elbow.
And most recently, WFAN co-host Joe Benigno called out Harvey after the hurler attended a Knicks game with supermodel girlfriend Anne V.
"My issue is this," Benigno said on the air on December 18. "Matt Harvey wants to be Derek Jeter. OK? Now, that's all well and good. But you know what? You've got a long way to go, you've got a lot of pelts to put on the wall before you're Derek Jeter. So I'm watching the Knick game, and he's sitting there with her courtside, and he's yukking it up and having a great time.
"…I've gotta see more from Matt Harvey. I think he even thinks of himself as, like, the king of the city here right now. He's gotta do a lot more before I can look at him that way."
The twitter user, @NickDeBabylon, happens to be a frequent caller to WFAN. And Benigno, which he admitted was "unbelievable," said on Monday, "I'm almost gonna be on Nick's side on this."
The 2013 National League All-Star Game starter went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA in his first full season with the Mets, recording 191 strikeouts and just 31 walks.
