Severe Storms Rip Down Trees, Power Poles In Parts Of New Jersey

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Severe storms slammed parts of New Jersey Tuesday night, ripping down trees and power poles in some areas.

In Hackettstown, photos showed trees on the ground, and wooden power poles lying broken on one block with power lines strewn along the sidewalk.

Even some cars were hit by falling objects, CBS2 reported.

CBS2's Lonnie Quinn reported much of the area escaped the storms Monday night, with the hardest-hit areas being in northwest New Jersey and up to Orange and Sullivan counties in New York state.

Winds reached 61 mph officially, but Quinn said winds were likely even stronger given that trees came down.

Another cell was moving through the area late Tuesday, heading along a line from Mahwah through New City, Haverstraw, Stony Point and Cortlandt.

Spots of activity were expected to persist Wednesday.
