Gunman Leaves Two Wounded After Opening Fire On Upper West Side

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two people were shot after a gunman opened fire on a quiet Upper West Side street.

The shooting took place at 82nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue -- an area filled with restaurants and teeming with people on a Friday night.

"We were just having a drink at the table here, having a drink, and we heard a pop, and then we saw cops outside. They had their guns drawn and everyone started running and we just got down on the floor and we really didn't know what was happening," witness Carolyn Frankel told CBS 2's Dave Carlin.

Diners in outdoor cafes scrambled for cover when the shots rang out.

A woman was struck in the foot. Witnesses said her male companion followed the gunman to West 83rd Street, where the gunman allegedly opened fire again, hitting the man in the shin.

A suspect was in custody late Friday night.

"We saw the police arrive and apprehend the first gentlemen and then take the second guy on the structure into the ambulance," Melanie Bieber said.

As of 11 p.m., the suspect was being at the nearby 20th Precinct police station. Both of the victims were expected to recover.
