LI Residents Up In Arms Over Proposed Lynbrook 'Gun Spa'

LYNBROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A proposal to build a sports spa housing gun and archery ranges alongside a hair and nail salon has some Long Island residents up in arms.

A Texas-based company has proposed transforming a lighting store on Sunrise Highway in Lybrook into a 'sports spa,' WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

Around 1,200 people signed a petition against the proposal.

Lynbrook resident Brianna Mitchell said she does not want guns to be discharged at the location near her home and expressed concerns for her two young children, who often play in their back yard.

"It is a definitely a safety concern for my boys -- they play in that backyard all the time," Mitchell said. "I wouldn't feel comfortable with that, knowing that on the other side of the fence there's a building full of guns."

The owners of the lighting business could not be reached for comment.

There will be a public hearing on the proposal on May 2.
